About CitySessions

CitySessions is a monthly acoustic music showcase in the Western Addition featuring the Bay Area's best original music.  CitySessions is hosted at Club Waziema, an Ethiopian restaurant/bar located at 543 Divisadero (between Hayes & Fell).  Each month, a large crowd of music lovers packs Club Waziema's back room to discover incredible local talent in this small, intimate venue.

How it started

The concept of CitySessions came together over beers at the Toronado. A conversation about our love of live music and the lack of live music venues in the Western Addition led to the decision to set up a local music showcase. Our goal was to feature the Bay Area's best musicians in a setting where their music would be truly appreciated.

Where to start? The founders of CitySessions had to look no further than their own backyards: the Divisadero Corridor in the Western Addition.  The venue chosen for the launch of CitySessions was Club Waziema. Formerly known as Club Morocco, artists such as Billie Holiday, James Brown and Tina Turner performed there in its heyday in the mid 70's. Live music took a new direction at this venue with the successful launch of CitySessions in August 2003.

The CitySessions founders are Diana Gaffney and Dean Preston.  They launched their first music showcase on August 12th, 2003 at Club Waziema, less than two months after the idea for CitySessions came together.  With the overwhelming response to the showcase, this project is cultivating a rich new live music scene in the Western Addition.
